Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
People assume a school needs a pool in order to have a swim team... not so! My student-athletes are so devoted to our team that they ride a bus to a nearby public facility about three times a week in order to workout in a pool. On non-pool days, you can find us running the track and lifting weights.
Our team motto has become "Ohana means family, and family means no one gets left behind." Our team really is a family, often with students who would never have met otherwise forming tight friendships and learning how to work together towards a common goal.
Our school is just one in a huge urban school district, with funding for athletics continually being slashed. Even as funding for education begins to trickle back, athletics programs are still being reduced and even cut.
My Project
With so few pool workout days, it is crucial to make every moment with pool access count fully. One way to do this is to maximize muscle use and increase efficiency in the water. Zoomers fins helps swimmers engage their leg muscles in such a way that they strengthen kick ability even when fins are no longer worn. Each pair of fins will be checked out to an individual swimmer for the duration of the season, then checked back in future year's use, over and over and over! This gift will be one that continues to give year after year.
Knowing that outside donors care about them will inspire my students to pay this generosity forward.
I will make sure that each swimmer knows that these fins were purchased for them because someone out there heard about their story--their dedication to a team that is already at a higher disadvantage than most--and thought that they deserved support. Thank you!!
