Help me give my students experiences children should have. As children, they need time to play. Hacky-Sacks, hoops and jump ropes will allow them to play and expel excess energy. The school experience will benefit from play time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
JMS is a Renaissance School. This means that most of our students are considered to be living in poverty. They work hard, but sometimes that's not enough. Sometimes extra help is needed. I teach them that accepting help is ok as long as they work really hard and try to help others.
The demographics shows that the school is very diverse.
Close to 40% of the student population are black, about 35% are Hispanic, about 20% are white, and multi-ethnic/Indian/Asian make up the rest of the population. I love looking at my class and seeing such a diverse group. Students are learning to listen to other points of view and to share their culture and ideas without fear.
These students have so much potential. Thank you for seeing that.
My Project
Students struggle with staying in their seat and concentrating all day every day. One reason is that they don't have a designated time to socialize and play. I want to provide students time to relax and have choice.
Students will have a choice and be able to decide for themselves which activities they want to participate in: walking around, jumping rope, or drawing with the sidewalk chalk.
They will choose whether they play individually or compete against each other when they hula hoop. They can play team sports with the Frisbee, the parachute, or with the Velcro catch/throw products.
They will gain confidence and build connections with each other, because they will have time to be themselves with their own choice.
