My students need literature about current events to keep them engaged and informed about the world in which they live.

My Students
My students come to school every day ready to show me, their peers, and the other adults in and around the school building just how great they are. As we live in the diverse city of Boston, we have students from families from all over the world. There are students in my class from Haiti, Nigeria, the Dominican Republic and Cape Verde to name a few places. There are a total of five languages spoken in my classroom, including English and Spanish. And while my students are from different corners of the world, they embody our school virtues--Curiosity, Collaboration, Empathy and Perseverance--everyday.
My students work diligently to understand the similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates everyday through dialogue and love.
Listening to my students discuss a difficult math situation or debate a character's motivation in a text they've just read is like watching genius happen. Not only do students listen to one another and build on each other's ideas, but they also are able to balance and make sense of differing opinions even when they are diametrically opposed to their own.
My Project
A subscription to TIME for Kids is exactly what my students need to put them on the right path to becoming engaged and informed citizens who lead productive and meaningful lives. Throughout our school year, we spend a considerable amount of time reading various text that discuss the "power of reading" and the obstacles people overcome daily to access books and other learning tools around the world. While engaging and informative, many of these texts are written in a fictional, or historical, context and provide a specific perspective for my students.
This TIME for Kids subscription would extend my students' understanding of and appreciation for the power of reading and the opportunity they have in front of them by coming to school everyday.
In addition to enhancing our regular reading block, this weekly magazine will be used during our Guided Reading block to assist students in learning and practicing the skills needed to be critical consumers of information. The articles and information contained within each weekly TIME for Kids magazine will stimulate curiosity, the human virtue that, as Walt Disney explained, "keeps [us] moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."
