No More Taped Pages!

My students need graphic novels like the TOON series to get them and keep them reading.

My Students

Our students come from hard-working families who don't always have a lot of money. They're good kids who want to learn! I'm proud to say that, despite our challenges, parents in other areas of our city send their children to us because they know we have a learning environment here.

We work hard at our school and we know that learning must be enjoyable to be educational.

We get our hands on our learning every chance we get. It could be using Cheetos to dust 'pollen' from flower to flower, dancing out our anti-bullying rap, or forming an island out of play dough to demonstrate our landforms.

My Project

Understanding what you read on your own is basically the end goal of much of what we do here in elementary school. We work hard in this room on double vowels and reading with emphasis and so on but at the end of the day the number one factor in reading for meaning is...caring about what the print says!

We need graphic novels in our classroom library to encourage students to get engaged in what they are reading.

Graphic novels have been a more recent development, especially at the elementary level, so my classroom library does not have that many. (By recent I mean the last five years - I'm buying books at used-book library sales remember!)

When I found a few at a recent book sale, my kids gobbled them up. Literally, I think, because I had to tape pages back together after about a week. This set would be perfect for the range of readers I have in my room. Everyone likes reading a brand new book, right?
