This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in the South Bronx of New York City. It is a challenging neighborhood in which to grow up, but my students are vibrant and strong and they can succeed despite the odds. Ninety-five percent of our students are Latinx or Black. Many are children of immigrants. They help their parents assimilate into American society while taking care of their schoolwork and their siblings. With every generation that makes it, they will in fact change those odds for the generations that come after them.
My Project
We have a dedicated group of students on our middle school running team. They show up for practice in rain or shine. During the winter months, these students can be seen running around the block of our school building early in the mornings before the sun has risen.
I would like to ensure that each member of our running team is outfitted with proper running shoes.
A number of them currently run in tennis shoes, walking shoes, or well-worn sneakers that do not provide the proper support and protection. Wearing supportive shoes can be an important way to prevent shin splints. Worn-out shoes can place undue stress on their feet and shins. Access to appropriate footwear can lessen this stress, and allow my students to continue to run safely and competitively.
