No More Plastic Bottles!

My students need 7 water containers and 2 packs of cups in order to prevent their need to purchase bottled water. Without functioning water fountains, we need to provide water in other ways.

My Students

We are trying to do our part to reduce our carbon footprint. We compost all of our lunch and breakfast food and have a comprehensive recycling program. We also take styrofoam to a local business where they turn it into packing materials. Now, we want to reduce our bottled water consumption.

Our school's location in a poor, urban city creates challenges for our students whether they are at home or at school.

100 percent of our students qualify for free lunch. Historically, our students have not been interested in science. However, since implementing sustainability efforts, their interest has risen sharply. One of the main disadvantages for urban students as it pertains to science is the fact that they are not surrounded by nature, and as such, they do not start asking questions about it at an early age. Students in less urban areas are at a greater advantage in that from day one, they are surrounded by open space, animals and plants. They can even see the stars when they look up in to the night sky! They get to watch their parents grow food, tend to gardens, raise animals and generally are able to grow up in a world where people are more respectful and appreciative of that which makes human life possible.

My Project

We are requesting 7 ten gallon containers and 2 packs of paper cups so that students may have drinking water at school. Since implementing the sustainability program at our school, the students have truly transformed. They are excited to be a part of something important. They want to make a difference. They love the opportunity to feel like what they do is having a meaningful, positive impact on the community and on the Earth as a whole. We recently came in fifth place in the state of Pennsylvania for our recycling and composting efforts. People were shocked that our students could be that successful, but we were disappointed that we did not win. Last week, we had a newspaper organization visit the school to interview our students about the environmental program. They reported being "blown away" by the program and how committed the students are to operating it. Like any child, our students want to do the right thing and my job is to give them the tools to do so.

Sustainability efforts indirectly benefit the community by empowering our students to become agents of change, and by teaching our students how to become better stewards of the Earth.

Our students are taking what they learn in school and teaching their communities. We continually receive positive feedback from parents, who have reported that their son or daughter has been an integral component of changing the way they manage waste and recycling at home. Our goal is to take the classroom home.
