Our school's location in a poor, urban city creates challenges for our students whether they are at home or at school. 100 percent of our students qualify for free lunch. Historically, our students have not been interested in science. However, since implementing sustainability efforts, their interest has risen sharply. One of the main disadvantages for urban students as it pertains to science is the fact that they are not surrounded by nature, and as such, they do not start asking questions about it at an early age. Students in less urban areas are at a greater advantage in that from day one, they are surrounded by open space, animals and plants. They can even see the stars when they look up in to the night sky! They get to watch their parents grow food, tend to gardens, raise animals and generally are able to grow up in a world where people are more respectful and appreciative of that which makes human life possible.
