No More Milk Crates: Get 1st Grade a Bookshelf!

Help me give my students a proper classroom library with bookshelves and bins!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Stright's classroom raised $475

My Project

Currently, our classroom uses leftover milk crates to store books in our classroom library. Most of the crates are too small to fit all of our books, covered with spilled food, and ultimately do not properly protect our precious classroom books.

A bookshelf would transform our classroom library from a makeshift space to an environment that is clean and accessible for all students.

With this proper storage, our books would no longer get water damage or chewed on by mice. It would prolong the life of these texts so students could continue reading their favorite books year after year. An actual bookshelf would show students they are deserving of a clean, high-quality classroom library and empower them to feel confident in their school and class. For families who come visit our class and their students, these resources would allow the environment to properly reflect the high-quality learning that is happening within our room.

Book bins specifically would allow texts to be organized by topic so students have the agency to choose books themselves based on their own interests while keeping our classroom well-organized. With only 30% of Philadelphia public school students reading on grade level, first grade is an essential year for building literacy skills and a love of reading that will last them a lifetime. My goal is to ensure every student in my classroom is reading to the best of their ability, ready for 2nd grade, and gaining critical, life-long literacy skills.
