My students need books with a variety of heros and heroines to immerse themselves in and fall in love with reading. This variety of books by Rick Riordan includes male & female characters of different ethnicity.
My students are very curious and always asking questions. I want to keep that natural inquisitive instinct alive by keeping them engaged with projects that are hands-on and meaningful.
We love to engage in all kinds of STEAM projects!
We pretend to be engineers and scientists on a regular basis. My students learn to be problems solvers and think outside the box through engaging in project-based learning. I want my students to LOVE all aspects of school and be lifelong learners.
My Project
In third grade some students come in loving to read and others come in hating reading. I want all of my students to LOVE reading. I just need to find the right match for them.
This is only my second year teaching third grade so my classroom library is small.
It currently includes some non-fiction, a few biographies, and a few series like Franny K Stein, and Marty McGuire but I am not hitting all interests or levels yet. Last year, I started reading Rick Ridoran's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" with my eight year old son and husband. Our family fell in love with the series. My son loved to act them out playing Percy Jackson and having me act as the lead female. We went on borrowing the books of the next series, "Heroes of Olympus". The awesome thing about these books is the variety of characters. There are females, males, African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian, many other main characters for the students to connect to. Once students can connect to a book, they can fall in love and want to read more and more. Students are able to check out a book from our classroom library by scanning a QR code and then return it upon completion.
