This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The last school year was so challenging for all our students. We operated on a hybrid model where the students only attended school every other day and were required to complete schoolwork at home on their "beyond the building" day. Some students were completely distance learning. Everyone struggled with this.
These kids are now back in school and learning in a new normal that requires them to wear masks at all times inside the building.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available. I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program. Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they have.
My Project
The new school year that began this August has been challenging. I just want to make sure that the students don't need to worry about basic supplies. Organization is the key to success in any facet of life. My students have three classes each day in three different locations. They are not allowed to bring backpacks to school and no one is allowed to use a locker, but they still need to keep everything for all their classes. Even having a binder, their papers still seem to get lost.
Zipper binders are a great tool to help students get organized and keep them from losing their school supplies and important papers especially with the continued restrictions that are in place this fall due to Covid-19.
Many of my students can't afford to purchase these types of binders and so this project will allow me to help some of my more disorganized students become more successful in school. Ultimately, I would like to be able to give each student on my team that wants one a zipper binder.
