My Students

Our students come from hard-working families who don't always have a lot of money. They're good kids who want to learn! I'm proud to say that, despite our challenges, parents in other areas of our city send their children to us because they know we have a learning environment here.

We work hard at our school and we know that learning must be enjoyable to be educational.

We get our hands on our learning every chance we get. It could be using Cheetos to dust 'pollen' from flower to flower, dancing out our anti-bullying rap, or forming an island out of play dough to demonstrate our landforms.

My Project

I'm proud to say that we have made great strides in our classroom in terms of students using technology in a way that shows they are in control and feeling comfortable with their machines. However, the battle between teacher and machine is ongoing.

I would be able to serve my students infinitely better with an appropriate computer for a teacher.

Each day, I lose somewhere around 45 minutes of work time to this ancient technology. I get to work 30 to 45 minutes earlier than necessary to get a jump on each day but much of that is spent rebooting and/or praying that THIS time when I click the tab at the top of my laptop it might actually go to the site instead of just ignoring me entirely.

Furthermore, any attempt to project an image (my projector is also currently down but that's for another project) requires several minutes of wait time as the computer decides whether it will go to the right powerpoint, if it will actually project that powerpoint, or if it just wants to take a break. The school MIGHT get new teacher laptops in January/February but I'm told even those will be old because of our limitations on buying power (or something like that). As a general education teacher, I'm cycling through trying to project our daily morning meeting, our phonics curriculum, our Eureka Math slides, our reading powerpoint that I create each week, any Social Studies or Science materials we need that day, etc.
