My students need English in a Flash, a research-based computer program, in order to improve the vocabulary of students with disabilities and English language learners.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in a high poverty area in Manhattan. Due to the low-income of the surrounding area, 99% of our students are entitled to receive free or reduced price meals. Disadvantaged in many ways, these students rarely feel success.
Many of the families in our community have immigrated from other areas such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Africa, and the middle east, bringing with them many English language learners.
As a result of these language barriers coupled with working parents and student disabilities, many students read several levels below grade level. When these students come to school, it is difficult to focus on learning in English, when the English language itself is such a challenge.
My Project
With English in a Flash, students who struggle with vocabulary due to language barriers, disabilities, or simply a lack of experiences with the world around them, are given an opportunity to gain the vocabulary needed to learn, read, and write in English. These students could vary in age from as young as kindergarten to as old as fifth grade.
Research has proven that with only 15 minutes of daily computer-based practice reviewing, completing lessons, and taking quizzes, English in a Flash has significantly helped to improve student success.
Additionally, English in a Flash provides reports to help teachers personalize further classroom instruction and keep students' parents informed.
Through my own experience with the program, students who routinely use it drastically improve their reading levels. Specifically, one student moved from a level D to a level E, F, and all the way up to a level P in only one year. Several other students came to America to learn English as their second language and after their usage of this program they became valedictorians in their own schools.
With your help, these students who are all too familiar with failure can, and will, begin to feel success.
