This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just begins
to live that day.
- Emily Dickinson
Each year writing is generally the centerpiece of my classroom. When people visit my classroom, they often remark how writing appears to be an important entity in there.
At our school, there are about 400 elementary school-aged students.
The vast majority of these students are minorities from a low-income, high poverty neighborhood in the South Bronx where the elementary school is located. The children I teach are lively, energetic, curious, and await all the world has to offer them. They revel in being young by exploring the world and looking for the next opportunity to display the knowledge they have accrued, thus far.
My Project
Being able to have a clean, neat, adequate, and appropriate space to call your own means a lot to all of us. Many of us have had the good fortune to be able to carve out a space that belongs to us. My students have desks, however most of my students are unable to fit under them. They're forced to try and squeeze themselves into a place that is just not suitable. This makes it hard for them to work in an effective manner.
They are entering first grade, which means they are still honing their handwriting skills. In order to be able to write comfortably, students feet should be planted firmly on the floor and they should be able to sit up in their chairs. That is an impossible feat however, when your body does not fit under your desk.
These desks will allow my students to be able to write in a free and comfortable manner.
They will be unencumbered by the hassle of not having enough space to sit properly. This is a project that will not only change the circumstances for my students this year, but for the students who will utilize these desks in the years to come.
