Help us have tears of joy not sadness. I teach in a rural county at a school with a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch. My class is a special education preschool class of three to five year olds. All of my students have special needs, ranging from down syndrome, physical impairments, developmental delays, autism, and language disorders.
While preschoolers are not expected to be able to write their name or letters, we must teach them "pre-writing" skills. We need the proper curriculum to teach these young children with exceptionalities how to begin working on their writing skills.
Handwriting needs to be taught to children, especially those with disabilities. While we want for children to explore with their creativity to make shapes and marks, in the long run they need to be able to form letters appropriately for higher grades. This curriculum, "Handwriting without tears", that we are hoping to get teaches the very basic of writing starting with lines, short and long and curves. They will have hands on materials to form letters and shapes. Also the musical cd uses body movements to associate with letter formation and directionality.
Please help us to better teach these children so they will be able to bring stronger skills to kindergarten when handwriting becomes more of a focus. We want to make handwriting start out fun so that frustration is limited and the children gain self confidence in their abilities.
