Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach two sections of seventh grade literacy in a severely under resourced school in Brooklyn. 80% of students in my classes qualify for free lunch. Our schools use the Balanced Literacy approach to teach students to teach reading and writing. At its core is the idea that students learn best through authentic reading and writing experiences. We encourage our students to "live like writers" by keeping a writer's notebook where they collect observations, thoughts and ideas that inspire their own writing. We refer to students as "authors." Balanced literacy encourages teachers and students to "publish" and celebrate student writing. Every student in my class realizes that "real" writing is published using a computer. "Real" writing is typed. Since most of my students do not have computers at home, they are usually unable to type their published pieces of writing. Our school has a computer lab with about thirty computers that is used by over one thousand students and teachers. It is understandably difficult to schedule time for both of my classes to get into the computer lab. Our computer lab is only open during the school day, so students do not have an opportunity to use computers after school. My goal is to acquire 5 computers for my classroom so that students can type up and print out their published writing. This way, students can use computers during class as well as after school. The first step toward our goal of five PCs is just one. My classroom is currently a technology-free zone. I can only change that with your help.
