Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my poor urban school with 95% minority students and a new no-cellphone policy, new working calculators can significantly enhance math education. Many students lack access to reliable tools at home due to financial constraints, limiting their ability to practice and master concepts. Calculators, like the Inspire models, bridge this gap by providing an equalizer—ensuring every student can engage with complex problems, regardless of socioeconomic background.

Math proficiency is critical for academic success and future opportunities, yet underfunded schools often struggle with outdated or broken equipment.

New calculators enable hands-on learning, allowing students to explore advanced topics like algebra, geometry, and even introductory calculus without relying on banned devices like cellphones. This fosters independence and confidence, as they can verify calculations, experiment with functions, and visualize abstract ideas—skills essential for STEM fields, where minorities are historically underrepresented.

For teachers, a full working set of Inspire calculators streamlines instruction. They can design lessons that leverage technology, such as graphing functions or analyzing data, without worrying about equipment shortages or malfunctions. This efficiency saves time, letting educators focus on teaching critical thinking over rote memorization. In a high-poverty setting, where resources are scarce, reliable tools reduce frustration and keep students engaged, combating disinterest that often leads to dropout rates—already a challenge in urban minority communities.

Moreover, calculators can level the playing field for standardized testing, where proficiency with such tools is often assumed. Students unfamiliar with them due to lack of access are at a disadvantage. Providing new calculators not only boosts classroom learning but also prepares them for exams that influence college and career paths, offering a tangible step toward equity in education.

In short, these calculators aren’t just tools—they’re a catalyst for empowerment, skill-building, and breaking cycles of disadvantage in a struggling school.
