My Students

Nelson Mandela said that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. My female students need to learn so they can be prepared to change the world.

Since we are located near two military bases, many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.

The population of my neighborhood is changing. The economic downturn has impacted my students. Over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. My students are racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 10% of my students are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. This year, when we became a safe harbor school, we had students bused from other sections of town and the ethnic composition of our school changed even more. We have a problem with bullies and low self-esteem. My 3th grade girls represent the very best in America, but many do not have the funds for school supplies or reading materials. They are falling behind in math, science and reading. My girls deserve a chance.

My Project

My 3rd grade girls are falling behind in math, science and reading. They are teased because they don't know anything. Many have even stopped trying to learn. I need something to spark the desire to take a chance on learning. I want to create an author study. Gail Gibbons is the perfect choice. She has written over 100 books on an array of nonfiction topics. As we study her works, students will develop deep background knowledge, improve reading skills and understand more about the research and writing process. I plan to use Bullying in the Schools to help students understand the difficulties Gibbons faced as a female author writing about science topics. We will discuss teasing and bullies while we develop an understanding of how words and actions can hurt. We will also be working on positive role models.

An author study is a great way to develop an understanding of different subjects as well an appreciation for the process of research and writing.

I desperately need these books by Gail Gibbons for my girls who are often both reluctant readers and bullied. I want to use lessons in Bullying in Schools with 3rd grade girls in my library and team them with the reading of new books. Help Townsend Press help me to acquire these important books for my students.
