My Students

My school will participate in Idaho Battle of the Books this year and my students need multiple copies of each title to read together. My school serves students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. All grade levels can participate in this activity, making it available to students school wide.

Book club and IBOB are great opportunities for my students to make connections with what they read and each other.

You see, my students may live in the surrounding neighborhoods today, but their life experiences come from near and far. Some of my students bring out of state experiences with them, while others bring international experiences. These experiences, when tied to their reading, make their connections deeper and discussions richer.

Our school is set in a suburban community with a mixture of neighborhoods, apartment communities, and rural farmland.

My Project

My school will be participating in Idaho Battle of the Books (IBOB) this year. The books listed will be used by my students in small groups. The idea of IBOB is that students create teams or book clubs with their friends and around the book choices. Together they read the book and then, they battle, answer questions about the books, with each other and with other teams in our building. The top teams from my school will then battle teams from other schools on an IBOB day later in the year.

While our library has a few of the titles, we do not have all of them or enough copies for students to read in small groups.

Without multiple copes of the books my students will not be able to participate due to a lack of materials.

In middle school socializing ranks as highly important among students. This format of reading with peers, in a student choice (from the list) environment makes students more likely to read. The battle questions range from simple comprehension to more complex inferences and support students metacognition of the text.
