About My Students

Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from city hall. Civic students from many areas of the city are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.

For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. In 2014, we established the first library and are including popular urban lit, graphic novels, and books about the justice system.

The blackbirds are a real life problem for our school garden. Right after the students plant seeds the big birds swoop down to eat them! It is very upsetting and frustrating after all the hard work of planting in the garden. Students will help create ideas and plans for stopping the bird invasion in the school garden.

Students will plan and help install anti-bird covers and scary signs. Students will learn teamwork skills and communication skills as they work together in the garden. Our students are determined to rid our garden of blackbirds and grow healthy plants that they can harvest and cook and EAT!

In Their Own Words

Michelle: "We are trying to get rid of the birds. We put CDs on string in the garden but the birds were just dancing!"

Stephanie: " We want at least the plants to grow and not be eaten by the birds. Nothing is growing and it is like a desert!"

Michelle: "I'll help maintain the garden once we some plants! And after the birds are gone we will check on the soil."

Stephanie: "I will watch that everything is put in right in the garden. I'll be the 'boss'! I think everything should be growing green and big so we can harvest the plants."

Michelle: "It's important it's a good experience and a nice skill to have. The garden gives students a chance to work outside as a team."

Stephanie: "When the weather is nice we can go outside and help work in the garden. When students are outside it is like meditating. We want to change our garden so there are lots of plants."
