This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember how crazy it was trying to navigate through middle school? Now imagine that you're doing it in a new country, in a language you don't speak yet, and a culture that's foreign to you!

My students are Newcomers, which means that they have all very recently immigrated to the United States.

They came from diverse countries including Armenia, Burma, Cambodia, China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, The Philippines, Peru, Russia, Thailand, and Yemen. My amazing students are already fluent and literate in one language and some in even more. Now they are working hard in my class to learn English so that they will have more opportunities in their new home.

My Project

My students show up everyday ready to work on their English, but they can't do this without enough books to go around! Have you ever tried to read a chapter book over your friend's shoulder? It's not ideal! This project will ensure that each of my students has access to books that match both their English proficiency levels and excellent tastes.

Donating to my classroom will directly improve the education of eighty-five resilient students who need the books they're interested in to improve their reading in English in order to fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors, immigration lawyers, artists, activists, and teachers, and more in their new country.
