Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am the art teacher at an elementary/middle school in the heart of Baltimore City. My students range in ages from 4-15 and come from a wide variety of backgrounds - however most come from low income neighborhoods in the surrounding area. They love art class! Because so many of them come from challenging home situations - there is a big emphasis in my classroom on social and emotional well-being. The ability for my students to express themselves is crucial to their growth. For many of them - art class is the safest place to do this. I feel very lucky to get to work with such bright, funny, expressive, and creative children.

My Project

In the past, my students have had to paint on copy paper which ends up crumbling, and we have been using the saddest broken crayons way past their expiration date. My students deserve better.

The only way a child can grow as an artist is if they have been exposed to a variety of art making tools.

Middle school is especially a time when students are beginning to hone in on their specific interests. For the students that already feel confident when it comes to art - I believe its important to expose them to art making tools outside of their comfort zone. For the students who don't feel that art is their best subject - I want them to dabble in materials that are foreign to them, for the sake of opening their eyes to all the art making possibilities.

My courageous, curious, and hard working students deserve the best! Help me make the art room - the best room in the school.
