Nixing the Never-Ending Noise

Help me give my students headphones and the ability to control the noise level that occurs when they are happily attending to their own learning opportunities. Lots of kids on lots of devices make lots of noise!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Johnson's classroom raised $665

My Students

I teach over ninety 1st-5th grade gifted students in a suburban Title I school in a high-poverty area. These kids have a thirst for knowledge and love exploring many topics. They represent many nationalities and will, one day, go on to be shining stars in the world! These future archaeologists, marine biologists, geologists, doctors, teachers, business owners, architects, interior designers, and who-knows-what-else need to see the world. Many of my students rarely travel outside of their immediate neighborhood, though. So, it is my job is to bring the world to them. (If you don't already know it, the world can get pretty loud.)

My Project

My students happily engage in many different learning opportunities. As I learn more about what makes them tick and what they are passionate about, I provide differentiated instructional activities that can broaden their horizons. Without the use of technology, this would be impossible. In this day and age, it is relatively easy to provide my kids with lots of enrichment activities using the technology available to us. What it doesn't provide for readily, though, is the ability to function in that classroom when it is full of noise from a number of devices all operating at the same time. Holy moly! It gets really loud.

Although I've tried a zillion ways to make sure my students have access to headphones, they rarely work out.

Earbuds are the first go-to. They can be purchased for a minimal cost which is great for the teacher budget. However, they usually don't work well or sound great but end up in a tangled wad the first time a student tries to put them away. Not to mention that they can't be shared for hygienic reasons and the little tips that make them slightly more comfortable fall off and get lost. I have been fighting that battle for many years and it's a war I cannot win.

I've also tried using over-the-ear headphones which also hasn't worked. Few students will bring in headphones of even marginal quality, so that leaves the procuring of headphones to me. Cheap headphones fit the budget but don't work well (much like earbuds) or come apart within a few uses. Expensive headphones sound great but who can afford enough for one student, much less over 20 at a time?! By helping to support this project, you are giving my students and me the gift of keeping our noise to ourselves!
