This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My freshmen students start high school by challenging themselves to a college level class. I teach Advanced Placement World History and these students are probably the only 9th graders in America taking the national exam this May! Three years ago our school began offering freshmen the opportunity to challenge themselves to a high level of academic performance as a means of helping them fast track their academic growth.
These 9th grade students show true grit!
Each year the class draws students with varied academic backgrounds who push themselves to perform at college level their first year, that means learning to read a college level textbook, write based on evidence, and analyze documents as apprentice historians. This is no easy feat since many of the students enter the class reading at or below grade level.
The growth these students demonstrate in this class has surpassed expectations. Data shows their reading levels increase on average 2 plus years, and 100% of students take the national exam in May. But most importantly, they develop as critical thinkers and develop the habits of mind such as persistence, thinking and communicating clearly, flexibility, independence and attention to accuracy .
My Project
My 9th grade students taking a college level course need a Surface Pro so they can quickly access online skill building activities, and knowledge review, in order to better prepare for the Advanced Placement exam in May. The internet has many resources for students to support their learning but many of my students do not have access to the internet at home. Due to the disparity in skill levels, some students complete assignments early and need additional challenges. Sometimes they need a device to catch up when they have fallen behind.
Having a resource, like the Surface Pro, which they can quickly access in order to review and study will reinforce their learning.
These students dedicate an additional 5-7 hours of homework time in order to practice the skills and knowledge necessary. Making it possible for them to have additional time and easy access while in school would greatly benefit them and also lessen their stress.
