I am the Bilingual Special Education teacher for grades 4/5 at P.S. 335 within a low-income school in the South Bronx. I plan to implement video games in my class. My project might be seen by some as a step in the wrong direction. If used in the right way, video games have the potential to inspire learning, immerse players in new worlds, make them rely on problem-solving skills, help socialize, help improve coordination and visual skills. By getting a Nintendo Gamecube in my class I will help teach students many skills using technology that is familiar to them. A good video game is challenging, entertaining, and complicated. It usually takes 50 or more hours of intense concentration to finish one. Just imagine that time and energy reading a book. Even kids who can't sit still in school can spend hours trying to solve a video game. Kids diagnosed with ADHD because they can't pay attention will play games for hours! The game focuses attention in a way that school doesn't. Some of the special education students possess a great deal of pent-up energy and aggression. Video games provide students with an outlet for their aggression, hence gaming is a healthy alternative to playground fighting or verbal outbursts. Video games can enhance reading skills, too. In the game Animal Crossing (for Gamecube), players become characters that live in a town full of animals. Over the course of the game, you can buy a house, travel from town to town, go to museums, and do other ordinary things. All the while, you're writing notes to other players and talking to the animals. You must keep close ties with characters or else they might leave your town to find other friendly characters. Because kids are interested in the game, they often end up reading at a level well above their grade, even if they say they don't like to read! Video games could also help bring students and teachers closer together. Playing games can be a social activity, during which students and adults learn from each other. By opening up lines of communication and understanding. As well as helping my students improve the many skills that games have to offer I intend to teach my students about conducting research via the internet, utilize this information to compare and contrast different video game reviews, make them create their own video game reviews for the games in the class. My students are at all different levels academically and deal with different forms of their disabilities. This Technology Station will help me address the specific needs of each student more effectively. Thank you for even considering us!
