My students love a challenge, whether it is how many times they can strike a pickleball with a paddle or how many times they can hop on one foot! But one of their most favorite challenges is our annual Ninja Yeti Jump Rope Challenge.
The Yeti is a mascot in our Physical Education class because we like to add "yet" to statements like "I can't do this---YET!" Or, "I don't know this---YET!"
Jumping rope is an excellent activity for students to improve their own personal skill and to get some cardio exercise which is good for their hearts. My students test themselves at the beginning of the year to see how many consecutive jumps they can do with a jump rope and then set a personal goal for the end of the year. I have found that if I "gamify" challenges in P.E. then students are extremely motivated to make forward progress towards their goals. One way that I have gamified jumping rope is the Ninja Yeti Jump Rope Challenge.
Grade level bands (K/1, 2/3, 4/5, and 6) have challenge charts posted in the gym that are color coded. These colors state the number of jumps required to reach that color level. Once a level is achieved, the students sign their names on a corresponding piece of colored paper that is posted on the bulletin board. Then they begin to attempt the next level.
We have been doing this for a few years now and I think it is time to up the incentives a bit. Students will still sign the colored posters, but will also earn a matching colored silicone wristband. The wristbands will let others know that they have made a commitment to reaching their personal goals and are moving up the levels.
