This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My eighth-grade students this year are such an incredible group of young people. At some point every day, I pause to look at them and am simply amazed by their strength and resiliency. After being out of school for a year and a half, they returned this year and got back on board with the school.

This year, I've noticed students are simultaneously eager to socialize after being away from their peers for so long and that they need time to recharge independently.

Every day after their lunch period one particularly special class; UCLA comes to my class to settle in for thirty minutes of choice reading.

You can hear a pin drop (particularly impressive given that this class immediately follows lunch). My goal is to make this environment as cozy and enjoyable for them as possible. After so much time apart, just being together in a room feels like a gift.

My Project

These night lights will allow students to escape into their books and their own imagination by creating a vibe in the classroom that feels unlike any other time of day. Their individual night lights will create a cozy "Gryffindor Common Room" vibe and transport us all to a magical castle during a thunderstorm. I want to turn out the harsh fluorescent lights and have each kid read by the light of their own night light, in a seat of their choosing.
