This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 4th grade at Hoover School in Redwood City. The school is located in a low income area and approximately 75% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Over 90% of the students are second language learners.
English is a struggle for many of our students and teachers are always in search of better ways to improve comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary in our students. This grant aims to provide 32 students in a fourth grade class with a copy of the novel Night at the Museum. This book is a fun filled adventure that tells about a night watchman at the museum where the pieces in the museum come to life at night. Students not only build vocabulary as the class reads and discusses the book together, but they also learn about historical events such as building the transcontinental railroad, ancient art, and people from throughout history including Sacagawea and Teddy Roosevelt.
Students will have their own copies of the novel to read along as the class reads together. They will be able to read the book again at their leisure which is important in building comprehension as well as fluency. Thank you for supporting this project.
