My Students

What is there not to love when you spend your day with six- and seven-year-olds? Every day is a new learning experience filled with curiosity and eagerness to persevere! Teaching in an inner-city school in upstate NY, we have found that children at this age are sponges, that are always eager to learn and explore new things!

We have 76 first grade students coming from a variety of different economic and cultural backgrounds, 100% of whom receive free lunch.

We are a dual language school and have several ENL students who speak a variety of languages. This year we have introduced our students to a variety of chapter books building on their reading comprehension, fluency and writing responses. We are so excited provide our classes with novels that they will be able to take home and read on their own or with a family member! Our goal is to help each child move into the 21st century by providing rich literature.

My Project

Reading in first grade is critical. We focus on comprehension, fluency and writing. Reading chapter books throughout the year has engaged our students and provided them with a skill they will use for a lifetime.

We are a team of first grade teachers who would love to promote summer reading for our students.

This year we have introduced many chapter books to our class to engage our students and enhance their reading abilities. We would love the opportunity to provide our students, who come to school with so little, good literature to enjoy throughout the summer months. We have selected Charlotte's Web and feel our students will enjoy reading.
