My Students

In elementary schools across the nations, many social studies programs have been cut or cut back, so when students enter middle school they are lacking many skills to be successful in social studies classes and life. Completing a National History Day project will prepare students for their future.

My 90 eighth grade students live right next to a beautiful, lush, mountain range and a pristine beach.

They may be privileged with the scenery, but with a deeper look. these students face many challenges. Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. To provide these students with the resources to complete a National History Day project, you will be helping them gain invaluable skills.

My Project

National History Day makes history come alive for students by engaging them in the discovery of the historical, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's kids are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires children. Each student will choose a topic within this year's theme (Leadership and Legacy In History), learn and go through the research process, formulate a thesis, write a paper supporting their thesis with evidence, and then share their knowledge with others through the creation and presentation of an exhibit, documentary, website, performance, or a paper. Students will be able to choose to create a project independently or with a group. Those who choose to work in a group will gain collaboration skills they will need for their future jobs and those working independently will learn time management skills.

Our school, students, and students' parents would greatly appreciate your support to ensure all students have the opportunity to be a part of the National History Day Competition.

Students will have the opportunity to compete at the school, district, state, and maybe even the national level. The National History Day Competition helps students build their confidence, become critical thinkers, and inspire them to be lifelong learners.
