My Project
My students are engaged and bright scholars in 1st through 4th grade. What makes them unique is that they use both English and American Sign Language to access their education. In our language-rich resource classroom, students love learning about the world around them. One of my favorite things about teaching this current group of students is that we get to learn together over multiple school years. It is exciting to watch students grow their language and academic skills from year to year. The challenging thing about teaching students in multiple grade levels is ensuring our classroom materials are growing and changing along with them.
This project is all about practicing critical thinking skills and providing students with opportunities to learn more about the natural world around them.
One of my hopes for the upcoming school year is to create a new STEM shelf in our centers area. My students love Lego and magnetic building blocks, but over the past two years, many have become masters of these materials and are ready for a new challenge. This project will provide our classroom with new building sets to practice engineering skills. The playground kit, domino kit, and circuits will allow students to explore concepts of motion, friction, energy, and electricity.
In addition to physical science, our classroom has taken a recent interest in gardening. This past spring students grew basil plants from seed. This was a rewarding classroom project and I would love to engage students in a bigger growing project that includes see-through planters and a stackable garden. Think of all the fruit and veggies we can watch grow and eat with these materials!
