This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A vast majority of my students are not reading at grade level, and it is my goal to improve their reading by two or more grade levels by the end of this school year.
Some of my students are the first in their families who will graduate from high school, and many of them will be the first to attend college.
It has not been an easy road for them. They encounter personal obstacles that range from living in homeless shelters with their families to not having enough to eat on a day-to-day basis. And yet, in spite of their difficulties, they make the choice to come to school every day. As a school we strive to create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and rigorous. We understand that our students need the stability of a caring staff along with the academic structures of a college preparatory program. Our teachers and administrators are phenomenal and our students certainly feel as though they are a part of a family, but we are in need of help - especially since we do not have many of the basic resources to help our students prepare for college level work.
My Project
I am requesting a document camera to help students learn the essential skill of reading closely. With the document camera I can project any number of "texts" onto the screen and show students what and how they should be annotating. I can project a student's work in progress and have the class make immediate suggestions. I can project other forms of "texts" (like artwork or photographs) and ask students to interpret what they are "reading" and inferring.
I am requesting the portable CD player to create a "listening center" for students who need auditory as well as visual support when reading a text. The portable CD player will be especially helpful for my special needs class because their reading levels are the lowest. Often, they need to hear the text more than once in order to process the information before they can annotate it.
I am requesting the two books to help me teach my students how to understand and develop arguments as well as how to read and annotate texts.
These donations will help my classroom tremendously.
Using the document camera will help my students understand what it means to be an active reader, and what it means to produce quality writing. The portable CD player will help me establish a "listening center" to help students (especially those with learning disabilities) with their reading comprehension skills. Finally, the two books will help me to lay a solid foundation when teaching active reading and argumentative writing.
