My Students

My 6th-grade students attend school in a district with over 70% of the students coming from low-income families. With resources going to much-needed programs, some classroom materials fall by the wayside. My students are eager to learn and need all of the benefits of a strong ELA program with an emphasis on science, including meaningful fiction and non-fiction texts that will help them develop a love of reading in addition to necessary skills needed to be academically successful. They have strong ideas and definite opinions which I hope to develop through year-long literacy and science centers.

My Project

Reading comprehension is at the heart of a strong reader. In order for students to develop their love of reading they must be exposed to interesting and diverse text. The materials that will be donated to our classroom will help students to connect personally to their reading by exploring issues and experiences that they can relate to. Choices magazine is an excellent source of current events which will allow students to critically think about subjects and develop opinions based on information presented in the articles. The two novels being requested are award winning books that feature diverse characters dealing with circumstances that are similar to my students or that may affect everyone in some form or another. Please help my students receive these important resources.
