My Project

I am the librarian for two elementary schools, both filled with creative, fun kids who like to read.

They come from a variety of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, but in the library, they share excitement over new books and information.

According to KidsCount, 43% of students in our district are eligible for free and reduced lunch – 7 out of 15 elementary schools are Title I – and 15% receive special education services. Many students cannot get to the public library, so their checkouts at the school library are their main access to books.

The kids LOVE graphic novels, and I can’t keep a lot of them on the shelves because of the LONG holds lists. I just ran a report, and am requesting books that have 4 or more holds, as well as brand new volumes in series that we don’t have yet.

Adding new copies and new volumes of beloved series will expand my kids' options for fun books that will make them WANT to read. By having as many entertaining books as possible available to them, my students - especially the reluctant readers - can choose reading as their go-to free-time activity.
