As a teacher in a high-poverty, urban school, it can be challenging to meet the unique needs of my students. They are active, curious, funny... and such hard workers! Despite their many challenges, they all push themselves to do more and learn more every day. As a part of our school for the past eight years, I have seen the growth that can occur when our students benefit from the support of our community.
Though my students face academic, behavioral, and social challenges, they rise to the occasion of learning every single day.
They are always proud of the work they accomplish in our classroom. We are part of a school focused on STEAM education through a project-based learning model.
My Project
Scholastic News magazines are a wonderful way to bring meaningful current events to my first grade students. First graders are always curious about the world around them, and these magazines help make current events more understandable and approachable for younger kids. My students enjoy reading the articles together and then taking time to explore the pages on their own.
Scholastic magazines are a wonderful way to help bring literacy home from school as well.
Many students lack good sources of reading material at home, so these magazines will be an important part of sharing reading activities with their families. Families enjoy hearing their students read the pages aloud at home after we've practiced at school.
In the past when we've used Scholastic magazines, we've also noticed how excited students get when they can read the articles and then make connections to their own lives and interests. The magazines are a great way to promote conversation skills as we discuss what we've read. We also incorporate writing skills by writing how we feel about information we've discovered, or writing more questions we have after reading about something interesting.
