This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Experience and numerous studies show us that students aquire English and become proficient readers faster by practicing at their "Just Right" level. I have a carefully designed system which holds my newcomer students accountable for practicing, then recording their voice reading a short, "just right" level book for 30 minutes every night. They finish by taking a short comprehension quiz. Students who consistently complete the reading assignment outside of class routinely reach English proficiency and a 3rd grade reading level 6-12 months earlier than peers who don't.
Help incentivize students to consistently complete this vital outside reading practice by providing $20 Amazon gift cards.
Because middle school students struggle to conceptualize a distant reward like English Proficiency, and struggle to connect daily actions to long term results like Honor Roll, I will track $2 per book which a passing quiz score. Once the student has passed 10 books, I will award them an Amazon gift card of $20. Let's make reading cool for all kids!
