Help me give my students access to a high interest, age appropriate novels that are accessible to a new English Language Learner. This library will help build our student's reading proficiency levels, in a respectful way.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are 1st and 2nd year Newcomer Students learning English as a second language. Being a Newcomer in High School can be very challenging, because not only are you learning English, but you are also expected to simultaneously keep up with your content area classes such as science, math and social studies which are completely taught in English. We would love to have a library of high school appropriate novels, with accessible reading levels for our Newcomer students to practice reading in English and increasing their reading levels.
Often time, it is difficult to find high interest, age appropriate novels that are accessible to a new English Language Learner.
Having access to these novels will allow our Newcomer high school students to be exposed to novel studies in their ELD classes to better prepare them for their Mainstream English classes.
In addition, we also are practicing learning basic skills such as telling time in English and making change/paying for things using US currency. Having hands on manipulatives would be very helpful in this learning process.
