My students need some basic supplies (clipboards, notebooks) and, most importantly, books featuring kids of color. I have also added several timers to be used for different group settings (e.g., sand timer for cool-down area).

My Students
My students are in a self-contained special education classroom. Students who qualify for this placement typically need specially designed instructional supports across their core academic areas. Often times students are two or more years below grade level and may have challenging behaviors.
Our classroom instruction is primarily delivered within small groups and is very targeted to students' needs.
To the greatest extent possible, I want to close the gap between these students and their peers. More importantly, I want my students to experience success in school and to see all of our work as applicable and important to their lives.
My Project
This will be my first year as a classroom teacher (hence the newbie), but I'm no newbie to teaching struggling readers. Having completed my doctoral program in special education with a focus on literacy, as well as a year in a residency program, I am ready to rock my classroom. One problem - as a new teacher I am limited to what I have inherited from the previous teacher and any other freebie books I can scrap together.
If there's one thing I know from the research literature about teaching intermediate struggling readers, it's that they MUST have access to books that are relevant to their lives if we have any hopes of dramatically increasing their skills.
Unfortunately, there has traditionally been a dearth of reading materials featuring kids of color, but in the last several years many wonderful series have been published. My wish list includes a few classroom materials, but you'll notice it's largely focused on improving my classroom library. With your help my kids will all identify as readers this year!
