My Students

At our school in the Harlem neighborhood of upper Manhattan, you will find students who are diverse, dedicated and inspired to become the next great STEM pioneers for the 21st century! With over 60% of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch, our school community has an amazing 100% graduation rate and 100% of students are accepted to college! For many of these students, they will be the first in their families to attend college or higher education!

Many urban students, find it difficult to see beyond the concrete jungle around them.

With hands-on, tangible outdoor explorations of nature, ecology, and environmental issues in the community park across the street from the school, I aim to have "no child left inside" as we explore connections to nature in our urban setting! Imagine how awesome it is for "city kids" to identify tree and bird species (beyond dandelions and pigeons) realizing that they are indeed connected to and stewards of nature!

My Project

Last year, during a visit to a newly opened section of Central Park, a student of mine saw a robin for the first time, and was in awe watching it flit about on the ground for food. This opened my eyes to what little connection urban students have to nature. Imagine what having binoculars could do to help students see even more of our natural world; our feathered friends taking up springtime residence in the city parks! Between looking for birds up high in trees or that are across a pond or lake, the details seen looking at birds close up can help students become more engaged in the world around them. It's not just birds, but even using the binoculars for closer looks at leaves in high branches or small mammals scurrying through the groundcover.

From hawks to hummingbirds, New York parks in the spring are the perfect outdoor classroom for beginner student birdwatchers.

As I turn the park across from our school into our outdoor classroom, students will log bird species, times they are spotted as well as any observed behaviors in order to start a long term spring investigation of nature in an urban setting.

Several citizen science projects through both the Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology will provide the basis for our lessons and activities. We will tour through several parks in the city during our lab periods for the spring semester as we collect data and look beyond the concrete jungle to the animals surrounding us!
