Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious, imaginative and resilient. Every day they come ready to learn and ready to challenge and question the world around them. As a school, we pride ourselves on inspiring students to embrace their individuality and are always exploring new ways for students to express themselves. My students are predominantly Latino and African American and they come from some of the most violent and impoverished neighborhoods of our state. Their bravery and resilience inspires me every day.
In English class, my students are eager to read as many books as they can get their hands on; especially when they are able to find books that tell stories similar to their own.
Most of my students, they will be the first in their family to have the opportunity to go to college and as such are extremely protective of their education. They are kind, beautiful, strong and full of life. I am lucky to spend my days with them.
My Project
These materials will help expand our classroom library and provide a more diverse selection of books. Since we do not have a traditional library in our school, the classroom libraries are what students mainly rely on to select their reading books. I aim to create a library that is exciting to all level of readers.
In previous projects I was able to get a copy of "The Hate you Give" by Angie Thomas, a book that talks about race issues in today's America.
Although a powerful book , it was simply too advanced for some of my students who are struggling readers. Today I have ordered "I am Alfonso Jones" a graphic novel that speaks of the same issues, but will be accessible to all of my students regardless of reading level.
