Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that has 27% limited English proficiency.
After 20 years of general education, I am now working with diverse learners.
These students are so anxious to learn, but I don't have the materials I need to meet them at their levels. Most of my students are in 7th grade, yet many of them are still learning to read or read significantly below grade level.
My Project
My students are already excited to return after our winter break. They helped create a list of things that we need to refresh our classroom. They asked for new books, more masks, markers, and headphones.
Everyone likes something new to look forward to.
The kids want new books to read and handpicked the titles. They requested markers, masks, and headphones to replace what has broken, dried up, or been used up. I really asked for their help to know what we needed the most when we return. They suggested bookmarks since we've been using post-it notes to mark our place. I think the new bookmarks will be a nice treat for them to go with the new books.
