My students need independent reading books and materials such as the Building Fluency Card Bank and Small Group Nonfiction Comprehension Folders to help them grow as readers.
As a teacher in a rural town supported by a state university, I see a diverse blend of students. Some are native to our state, while others, visiting from halfway around the world, are enrolled with us while their parents work as visiting scholars. Many languages and cultures are represented in my middle school of almost 900 students.
Reading and literacy skills bind us together.
Together, we read popular young adult books and classic literature. We write about our experiences and our reactions to what we read. It is through these interactions that we learn that, maybe, we are not so different after all.
My Project
I have just accepted a new position teaching reading to both 6th and 7th graders. I have resources for 7th graders on different reading levels, but I need some 6th-grade materials to fill the gaps.
My students deserve materials designed just for their level.
This project would provide high-interest reading selections for 6th graders and materials targeting fluency and comprehension specifically. The fluency card set and the nonfiction comprehension folders will allow me to differentiate instruction and offer small group lessons. Students can then apply those improved fluency and comprehension skills as they practice reading independently in books designed especially for their age and needs.
