This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I currently serve as a Future Ready Librarian at a bilingual Title I school. We have 730+ students, ranging from Kindergarten to sixth grade, with over 90% coming from low-income backgrounds. One of my professional goals is to further develop our library collection so that my students have access to quality picture books to make story time fun and engaging.
My students are curious, eager learners who need exposure to a variety of picture book stories to help them grow their interest in books and reading skills.
Since the majority of my students are English Language Learners, they especially need access to new books for story time and for independent reading in a variety of reading levels that will encourage their love of reading, and increase their literacy rates.
This project will give my students access to picture books that also act as mirrors, windows, and doors. Books that act as mirrors allow students to see themselves reflected in characters from similar backgrounds.
Teachers will be able to utilize these picture books to create engaging, curriculum-based Language Arts lessons. This curated collection of picture books represents a variety of reading levels so that teachers can scaffold their lessons to best meet the needs of their learners.
Students will be able to read these books in the classroom or at home, encouraging their love of reading, and helping to increase their reading stamina.
