Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are 6th and 7th graders who attend an inner-city school that is 100% poverty. They come to school anxious to learn, even though they struggle with many of their basic academic and social skills. The students want to be successful and are fighting the effects of the pandemic. Many lack motivation and have forgotten how to study.

Even with many factors against them, my students show up each day, wanting to be better.

They need assistance in learning how to study and prepare themselves for the academic world.

My Project

Recovering from the pandemic has been more difficult than anyone expected. Learning loss is evident, as is the challenge to focus on classwork.

After being back in person for almost an entire semester, the scholars are struggling with getting back to good practices, such as taking notes.

This project will allow me to use a document camera to model how the students should keep their notes, neat and organized. Note-taking is an important skill for middle school and beyond. It will also allow us to share student work, and use it as the basis for discussions. In addition, many of my students need to brush up on the multiplication facts, as this is the basis for so many parts of math. They love to practice with flashcards. The wireless keyboard will give students access to the Clever-touch from different places in the classroom and the Expo markers will allow them to share work on whiteboards. These materials will definitely help the students be more successful in math class.
