This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I currently serve as a Future Ready Librarian at a bilingual Title I school. We have 730+ students, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, with over 90% coming from low-income backgrounds. One of my professional goals is to further develop our library collection so that my younger students have access to high-interest graphic novels.
My students are curious, eager learners who need exposure to a variety of stories to help them build connections across our pluralistic society, and help them discover the differences and similarities in the dynamic cultures that make up our global communities.
This project will give since the majority of my students are English Language Learners, they especially need access to high-interest graphic novels in a variety of lower reading levels that will encourage their love of reading and increase their literacy rates.
Teachers will be able to utilize these high-interest books to create engaging, curriculum-based Language Arts lessons. This curated collection of books represents a variety of reading levels so that teachers can scaffold their lessons to best meet the needs of their learners.
Students will be able to read these books in the classroom or at home, encouraging their love of reading that will help them reach their fullest potential.
