Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my fifth-grade classroom live in a high poverty area. Many of them lack basic necessities at home, and coming to school is their time of calm, their escape from the struggles of daily life. These children attend every day in hopes of learning the skills they need to guide their future.
Learning is their lifeline, their “road to freedom,” from the poverty, substance abuse, broken homes and violence that surround them.
Many of my students are below grade level for reading, writing and math. Diagnostic assessments reveal they lack fluency in their reading and math facts, which then affects their comprehension of text and ability to complete grade-level reading analyses and mathematics. But that doesn't keep them from trying to improve every day.
My Project
My students need help realizing that what they are learning now is important for their future. Chromebooks are a gateway for my disadvantaged students to explore the world beyond their backyard, and to see with a new perspective the world of opportunities that await them.
Imagine their excitement as they master basic skills and relate them to real-life situations, by pursuing planetary explorations, examining ecosystems, reliving history at museums on virtual field trips, and more.
Their use of Chromebooks will help them build and master math and reading skills that support and extend grade-level expectations, as well as extend their learning through extensions and augmented activities. I'll use Google Classroom to coordinate assignments, skill checks, reading and exploratory activities through sites such as Newsela, Google Earth, Front Row Ed, Zearn, JASON Project and Khan Academy. Chromebooks make it easier for my students to access and extend their learning, and this is the first step in helping them realize their dreams and ways to pursue them.
