A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play, and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices, and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
First grade is a busy place to be. As a teacher, it is important that I am flexible so I can meet the needs of the diverse learners in my classroom. I am finding each year that I have more students that really need different spaces to learn. The days of sitting at desks in neat rows are over. Having students sitting silently at their tables and all working on a work sheet is unrealistic!
In my classroom, I am trying to create an environment that is inviting, friendly, flexible and entices students to work hard and be in charge of their learning.
By having a variety of work areas student can find a spot that fits them. Allowing students to choose a work spaces increases production and focus. Currently we have students who use stools and sit at my reading table to work. Others, use jack chairs on the floor with a clipboard to hold their paperwork, another student might be doing their work from a standing desk. In first grade, I am looking to provide more opportunities for students to choose where they do their work. Upon completion of this project students will have a variety of cushions, stools and work surfaces to choose from. I was able to find folding lap desks that will fit perfectly at our first grade tables. Students will be able to use them on their table top to stand and work on the flat surface of the lap desk. These compact and portable lap desks are versatile tools in our classroom as we embrace flexible seating options. I am asking for a leaf canopy to find a sheltered place for student to work on their own. I look forward to seeing how my class finds creative ways to use these new materials.
