This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 300 kids in 2nd through 4th grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.

'Captain Underpants' is one of the kids' favorite comic book series; we don't have all the titles, and the copies that we do have are pretty tattered, so we'd love to get a new, complete set: additionally, there's a new Dav Pilkey series that the kids would love to read: it's called 'Dog Man'.

My Project

What's not to like about 'Captain Underpants'? The series follows the ludicrous adventures of a pair of schoolboys who've managed to hypnotize their school Principal into thinking he's a super-hero. Instead of sallying forth to combat villains in a slick suit and cape, our school Principal foils evil-doers stripped down to his underpants. Third-grade heaven. Look at a couple of the titles: 1) Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets 2) Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgie Woman. I think you can see why the kids adore these comics... 'Dog Man', the new Dav Pilkey series, is 'a hard-biting canine detective, half dog, half human'. The kids told me about 'Dog Man'. They have been asking for it in our Library Suggestion Box. I'd absolutely love to get them this series.

You see, contrary to what you often hear, kids DO love to read: you just have to supply them with fun, well-illustrated reading materials.

These Dav Pilkey titles should appeal to 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. Our school has about 100 kids in each grade. Of course, library books last several years. I estimate that these books will be read by 300 students. (That's what happens when you donate to a library: you get more bang for your buck.) It will be easy to confirm the impact of the project by pulling circulation statistics. Based on the popularity of Dav Pilkey, I'm 100% confident that these books will be among the top circulating titles in our library. Please help out our wonderful kids. They would adore these books!
