My Students
I have been teaching kindergarten at my school for 17 years. Every day, I am greeted by 22 wonderful, smiling faces. I feel lucky to have a job that I love. However, this year has been especially challenging. In October, our community was ripped apart by the Sonoma fires. Fortunately, none of my students lost their homes, but many had to evacuate for several weeks. School is the one place that they can come on a a daily basis and know that they are safe! My school population is very diverse and challenging, but I wouldn't have it any other way! We are a Title I school, with 94% of our student population qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of my students do not even come with a backpack or supplies. I usually spend a significant amount of my own money buying supplies for the entire year.
My Project
Most of my kids do not have a front or back yard to play in. They get most of their physical activity at school. I am very fortunate to have my own fenced off playground. I love to bring out new items for my kids all the time. We need new jump ropes, chalk, balls and storage bins to bring some of our stem building things out. I like to keep my kids active and all of these new items will help do so. I also have a table outside that I like to keep stocked with art supplies. These new items will take us to the end of the year and help start the beginning of my next school year too.
