Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are inquisitive, exuberant, and thirsty for information. On an average day we play with toys to help them explore answers to their many questions, create art to fulfill their creative spirits, and learn literacy and handwriting as well as fine motor activities to improve those skills.
We are a migrant school and Title 1.
This is the 1st year we have implemented a Pre-Kindergarten program and have just begun to acquire the proper resources. The other teachers have loaned me almost all of the things currently in our classroom. I am a 1st year teacher and moved across the country to do what I love- learn and teach. I believe in my kids and have spent over half my paycheck to provide the basics. All of these factors combine and leave me grateful, but in need of things that I don't have the ability to get for my endlessly deserving 4-year olds. My students want nothing more than to learn and be loved in a safe place. They are joyful in spite of any circumstance or challenge they encounter at home- many are in foster care. My kids come from homes where the only books they have access to are the ones sent home that we make in class. I am striving to provide them with resources and opportunities to equalize their education, but I need help.
My Project
Currently I have large Rubbermaid bins with sand from our playground in one and the other for water. They are small and can only allow for 2-3 students at a time. The sand and water table would allow at least half of my students to explore the properties of water as a liquid and sand's small particles at once. They can make discoveries about how water moves and other basic science concepts using this necessary tool. The sand we have is mixed with rocks and creates a large dust cloud, which is unhealthy for the students to breathe. The sand I have selected is specifically for sand and water table use and is easy to remove when switching to water through the small drain in the table. The toys are fun and educational with numbers and letters to identify or combine in a variety of ways- spelling, names, games, etc. They are instrumental in developing fine and gross motor skills as well.
My students love playing with sand outside and could probably spend hours in the sink if I let them!
I want school to be a place that makes them realize there are greater resources available and learning is exciting. I want my kids to know that they have the same foundational knowledge as other students and as long as you live a life full of inquiry combined with dedication and perseverance, there is nothing you can not achieve. There are people who are willing and wanting to help you succeed.
