Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Starting in the Fall of 2007, I will be teaching groups of 9th and 10th graders at PACE High School in New York City whose reading abilities are shown to be far below standards according to the New York State English Language Arts exam, which means that they are currently two or more years behind where we would like them to be based on their age and grade level. Clearly, there's a lot of tough work ahead. For my students to show several years of growth within one year, which is what needs to happen for them to catch up with their peers, they will need, among other things, to show a good deal of fortitude and patience with themselves, and have access to a library of high-quality and high-interest books that I can share with them and use to gauge their literacy development. At the moment, because my position is newly created, I haven't a single book to provide them...yet. While they will need to discover the aforementioned character attributes within themselves, the books, at least, are possible to obtain from outside sources. I am therefore requesting a donation of books for the start of the 2007-08 school year. With your help and mine, these students WILL advance to become stronger readers, stronger thinkers, and will be in a better position to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them. Thank you in advance for your consideration!
